Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Wednesday criticised Nino Lomjaria, the former Public Defender of Georgia, for politicising and harming the institution.

In his remarks, Papuashvili noted that Lomjaria's tenure as Public Defender was marked by political bias, which had undermined the integrity and prestige of the institution.

He referred to a specific case involving the transfer of the imprisoned former President Mikheil Saakashvili to another clinic, with Lomjaria's conclusions being rejected by the European Court of Human Rights.

"As you know, her conclusion was that Mikheil Saakashvili's health condition is such that he needs to be transferred from the Vivamedi clinic [in Tbilisi] to another place or sent abroad. ECHR said that the then Public Defender Nino Lomjaria was lying”, Papuashvili noted.

He contended that Lomjaria's politicisation of the Public Defender's Office had eroded its constitutional significance and value.

“[...] Now it has finally been proven that she was a politician who harmed the institution of the Public Defender, since she politicised this institution, made it lose its importance and high value, which is assigned by the constitution”, Papuashvili concluded.
