British official highlights UK support for Georgia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity

24.11.23 11:45

Leo Docherty, the British Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Europe, on Thursday highlighted the United Kingdom’s “continued support” for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In his social media post Docherty expressed his “delight” with his visits to Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan - the countries he said were “fundamental to Europe’s future security and prosperity”.

Docherty added the UK was “proud” to be increasing its cooperation in the South Caucasus region to support peace and stability.

The comments come after Docherty and the Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Tuesday discussed strategic partnership between the two states and prospects of strengthening the cooperation during the former’s visit.

The discussion also reviewed the positive recommendation of the European Commission on Georgia’s EU membership candidate status as well as the situation and challenges in the wider region and the world, and highlighted the “positive” role that Georgia could play in “achieving security and stability in the region”, the Government administration said.

The British official also met the country’s Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili and assured the Georgian top diplomat the UK’s support for building “resilience in the face of Russia’s malign activity”.
