Supreme Court upholds Court of Appeals ruling in Nika Gvaramia’s case, declares cassation appeals inadmissible

The Supreme Court has upheld the ruling of the Court of Appeals in the case of Nika Gvaramia, the founder of the Main Channel, as well as Kakhaber Damenia and Zurab Iashvili.

 

The country's highest instance court declared the cassation appeals of both the prosecution and the defense inadmissible. Accordingly, Nika Gvaramia's prison term of 3 years and 6 months remains valid.

 

For information, Nika Gvaramia, the founder of Mtavari TV, was earlier found guilty by the Tbilisi Court of Appeals. Prior to that, Tbilisi City Court sentenced him to 3 years and 6 months. According to the same decision, Nika Gvaramia was found guilty of two episodes of abuse of official authority, which were related to Porsche and the episode of embezzlement of 6 million 700 000 GEL.

 

With today's decision of the Supreme Court, the fight in all instances of the country in the case of Nika Gvaramia has ended.

 

0On September 6, 2020, the Prosecutor's Office indicted Nika Gvaramia, as well as Kakha Damenia, the former financial director of Rustavi 2, and Zurab Yashvili, the director of Inter Media Plus, in the Rustavi 2 case.

 

Nika Gvaramia was accused of embezzlement of a large amount of property rights belonging to Rustavi 2 by the group with a prior agreement, commercial bribery, forging of false documents, and legalization of illegal income.

 

Nika Gvaramia was also accused of abuse of official authority. Gvaramia was given a bail of 40,000 GEL as a preventive measure. In addition, he had limited right to leave the country.

 

Kakha Damenia was accused of the illegal embezzlement of a large amount of property rights belonging to the Rustavi 2 broadcasting company, which was committed by a pre-agreed group using their official status. Damenia was given 50,000 GEL bail as a preventive measure. He was also prohibited from leaving the state border without informing and consent of the investigative body.

 

As for Zurab Iashvili, he was accused of commercial bribery and forging a false document.

 

Iashvili was given 50,000 GEL bail as a preventive measure.
