Salome Samadashvili: If Georgian Dream tries to pass the deoligarchization law, it will be sabotage against the candidate status

If Georgian Dream tries to pass the deoligarchization law, it will be sabotage against the candidate status - it will be evaluated by the European Union not as a fulfillment of the requirement relating to deoligarchization, but as an attack on Georgian democracy, Lelo MP Salome Samadashvili said while commenting on the opinion of the Venice Commission.

According to her, the adoption of this law may turn out to be no less damaging than the law on so-called agents.

"Adoption of this law will not fulfill the requirements of the European Union, but it will be a very big blow to democratic pluralism and development of democracy in the country. The opinion of the Venice Commission directly repeats the assessments we had made on this topic and directly calls on the authorities not to adopt it. Therefore, I would like to emphasize that the adoption of this bill by the majority will not be a fulfillment of the requirements of the European Union, but another sabotage against the candidate status, because in the conditions of a similar conclusion of the Venice Commission, its adoption will be damaging for this country, perhaps no less damaging than the Russian law on agents that Georgian Dream tried to adopt in this parliament.

We were told by the Members of the European Parliament that de-oligarchization means debidzinization, and debidzinization means the change of government through democratic elections and liberation of state institutions seized by the oligarch. The Venice Commission also said this in its report," said Samadashvili.

She also spoke about the draft law on the National Bank and noted that Georgian Dream’s move to override the veto is also a step against the status, because one of the main requirements of the European Union is to strengthen the independence of institutions.

"All steps aimed at the final abolition of the National Bank directly contradict the requirements of the European Union. This is important in light of the opinion of the Venice Commission, which says that independent institutions should be strengthened, including the National Bank. Therefore, I consider the step taken in the direction of overriding the veto as sabotage against the status," said Samadashvili.
