Several schools and kindergartens have gone on a strike in Chiatura town, declaring their solidarity with the miners, who have been on a strike for the past eleven days.
“Schools and kindergartens have gone on strike; they have joined us, declaring their solidarity with us. They share our demands and are against transportation of manganese ore through the town. We will continue strike until our demands are not satisfied,” Gela Badzgaradze, one of the miners, told InterPressNews.
Miners in the western Georgian town of Chiatura went on a strike on May 16. They demand 50% salary increase and better working conditions from their employer – the Georgian Manganese company. They also demand banning transportation of manganese ore through the town.
