Shalva Papuashvili: The evaluation of the EU membership questionnaire makes us think once again about those Georgians who are telling us internally, and telling the EU externally how Georgia does not deserve the status of a candidate

According to the assessment prepared by the European Commission on the second part of the EU membership questionnaire, Georgia is the best among the trio countries in 3 out of 6 groups of issues, including the most important, the so-called group of fundamental areas, this is how the Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia Shalva Papuashvili responds to the analytical report published by the European Commission.

As Papuashvili points out, this assessment once again confirms that, in case of a merit-based decision, Georgia should have become a candidate state for EU membership last year, in June.

"According to the assessment prepared by the European Commission on the second part of the EU membership questionnaire, Georgia is the best among the trio countries in 3 out of 6 groups of issues, including the most important, the so-called group of fundamental areas. This assessment once again confirms that, in case of a merit-based decision, Georgia should have become a candidate state for EU membership in June last year. At the same time, this evaluation will make us think once again about those Georgians who then and now, in words and in writing, are telling us internally, and telling the EU externally how Georgia does not deserve the status of a candidate. However, along with this report, according to studies published only in the last few days: in the corruption perception index, we are ahead of all candidates, 9 EU and 11 NATO member states. In the index of human freedom, we are ahead of all the candidates, 3 EU and 7 NATO member states," Papuashvili wrote on the social network.

For information, the European Commission published a report on Georgia’s alignment with the EU acquis. As stated in the report, Georgia has some level of preparation to implement the acquis in the area of justice, freedom and security. Also, the document says that Georgia has a certain level of preparation in the field of public procurement. The document also talks about digital transformation and media and emphasizes that the EU supports the smooth functioning of the internal market for electronic communications, electronic commerce and audio-visual services. The report notes that the rules protect consumers and support universal access to modern services. In this regard, the document reads that "Georgia has some level of preparation in the area of information society and media."
