MEP Auštrevičius: Grant Saakashvili right to go abroad, preserving his life and country's chances to maintain its European face

02.02.23 17:30

Mikheil Saakashvili, the former Georgian president, who awakened Georgia and changed the country beyond to recognition, has been languishing in prison for 16 months, MEP Petras Auštrevičius stated during the debate at the European Parliament regarding the situation of Georgia’s former President Mikheil Saakashvili  on Thursday.

“The current Georgian government claims to be pro-European, and one with closer ties with the West. At the same time, society is deeply polarized and there is a fierce political struggle that ignores elementary political culture.

Mikheil Saakashvili, the former Georgian president, who awakened Georgia and changed the country beyond to recognition, has been languishing in prison for 16 months. Is this the retribution for political rivalry or a return to the past? I call on President Saakashvili to be granted to the right to go abroad for medical treatment without any delay, preserving his life and the country’s chances to maintain its European face,” MEP declared.
