Germany supports Georgia’s European perspective, said Bundestag member and Chair of the South Caucasus Friendship Group, Johann Wadephul following the meeting with the Georgian parliamentary delegation.
“We had a very good exchange with our colleagues from Georgia. We have long-lasting relations with parliament, politicians, and the country. I can really say that Germany is a friend of Georgia. We are absolutely in favour of the European perspective for Georgia.
We need to be united against Russian aggression and if Georgia joins us and is supportive of Ukraine, this is very important for Europe as a whole and also for the rules-based international order, which we together defend.
So, on this basis, we are working together on the European Perspective for Georgia. We have to be honest in ongoing discussions in Germany and other European countries about how the enlargement process should go on not only for Georgia but other countries of the Western Balkans.
You have a lot of friends in Germany who want to see Georgia with candidate status. This will take some time. But if Georgia develops in the way it did in the last months, I see the real chances that Georgia will be successful and joins us in the European Union,” Johann Wadephul said.
Headed by the Speaker, the Georgian parliamentary delegation is on a visit to Germany for bilateral meetings with high-ranking officials in Berlin.
