Khatia Dekanoidze: Georgian Dream's anti-Western campaign, attacks on US and European Union ambassadors and NGOs are proof that they continue the process of failing to get the EU candidate status

Georgian Dream's anti-Western campaign, anti-American and anti-European messages, targeted attacks on US and EU ambassadors, influential civil institutions and non-governmental organizations are proof that they continue the process of failing to get the EU candidate status - the recommendations written for getting the candidate status are not being implemented, one of the leaders of the National Movement Khatia Dekanoidze stated at a briefing, responding to the non-allowance of the non-governmental organization "Fair Elections" in the working group created for the revision of the electoral code.

According to her, a broad electoral reform is needed to remove oligarchs and kleptocrats from governance in Georgia.

"The change of the electoral system in Georgia and the thorough reform of the court, the return of public trust in the independence of the court and the elections, which must be done through extensive electoral reform and extensive changes in the judicial system, are the most important recommendations written by the European Union, which must be fulfilled in order for the country to fulfill its obligations to obtain candidate status.

Unfortunately, Georgian Dream continues to ignore the necessary recommendations to obtain candidate status. This is confirmed by the decision taken by the parliamentary majority to withdraw from all processes the most influential organization working on the election environment and electoral legislation in Georgia - "Fair Elections". Also, an important group of experts working on the judicial system, I am referring to Nazi Janezashvili's organization, which has been working for years on the reform of the court and the Supreme Council of Justice. Georgian Dream's anti-Western campaign, anti-American and anti-European messages, targeted attacks on US and EU ambassadors, influential civil institutions and non-governmental organizations are proof that they continue the process of failing to get the EU candidate status. The process should be inclusive and involve civil society. And not only alongside with organizations selected on the basis of recommendations by Georgian Dream. Removal of the oligarchic system from governance in Georgia, removal of kleptocrats from governance requires a broad electoral reform, which is a vital recommendation for candidacy for the strengthening of democracy.

Judicial reform and rule of law are the most important principle of democracy. It is not in the interest of Georgian Dream to implement the recommendations. Our party and faction continue to work with "Fair Elections" as well as with the non-governmental sector to implement the package and recommendations necessary for democratic elections," said Dekanoidze.

Dekanoidze also noted that Georgian Dream is not interested that the process be effective. According to Dekanoidze, now we all have to think together about how to get the status of a candidate, but also the result of a broad consensus should be how to remove Bidzina Ivanishvili and the oligarchic rule from the government.

We remind you that the non-governmental organization "Fair Elections" was not allowed to participate in the working group created for the revision of the election code, the first meeting of which was held in the Parliament yesterday.
