Local self-government elections ongoing in Georgia

02.10.21 11:20

Local self-government elections are underway in Georgia. Voters are electing 64 mayors as well as 2,068 members of 64 City Councils. Polling stations opened at 07:00 and voting started at 08:00.

The candidate who receives more than 50% of votes in the mayoral elections will win. At the same time, majoritarian members of City Councils need to overcome a 40% threshold.

The threshold in municipalities, except Tbilisi, is 3% for the proportional election. In the Tbilisi City Council, the mandates will be distributed proportionally only to those election subjects that will receive at least 2.5% of the votes.

Local self-government bodies elected in 2021 will be more proportional - in self-governing cities: Tbilisi, Kutaisi, Rustavi, Poti and Batumi, the ratio of City Council Council members will be four to one, while in other municipalities the ratio will be two to one.

In the October 2 local elections, voters will elect mayors and city councils for a four-year term.

According to the Central Election Commission, 3,513,884 voters have been registered in the unified voter list.
