In January-August 2021, the number of Georgian citizens seeking asylum in Germany increased. According to Bpn.ge, according to the statistics of the GermanFederal Office for Refugees and Migrants (BAMF), 2,163 Georgian citizens applied for refugee status in 8 months of this year, which is 5% of the total number.
In January-August 2021, a total of 108,375 foreigners applied for asylum in Germany.
Although the share of Georgians in this indicator is small, Georgian citizens are among the top ten asylum seekers in Germany. According to BAMF statistics, only in August 2021, 353 Georgian citizens applied for asylum in Germany, a total of 2,163 this year. In January-August 2020, 1,811 citizens of Georgia applied for refugee status in the Federal Republic.
In August 2021, 11,847 foreigners applied for asylum in Germany, most of whom - 3,909 - were Syrian citizens; 2 266 were citizens of Afghanistan; 913 were citizens of Iraq.
According to the information released by EUobserver yesterday, the European Union is requesting discussions on the suspension of visa-free travel with some countries, including Moldova and Georgia. The reason for this is the illegal residence and unfounded asylum requests of citizens from these countries. Germany is especially outraged by this fact. According to EUobserver, France is dissatisfied with Georgia and Albania, while the Czech Republic says that there is a high rate of unreasonable demand for asylum from citizens of Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. However, later yesterday, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier called the information spread by EUobserver "fake news".
